San Jose’s Funny Face is a playful, fuzz-drenched alt/punk outfit that’s here to get you sweaty and make you spill your drink on the dance floor. The band blends big hooks and guitars with a DIY aesthetic full of the kind of lo-fi immediacy that makes people dedicate their lives to rock and roll. Band members Adam Szyndrowski (guitar/vocals), Mallery Petty (bass/vox), are a compelling musical unit that adds no frills to its vision of what rock music should be, preferring to drive songs straight at listeners in a refreshingly direct way. The band has made some noise in San Jose and is ready to take its new album Dog In Hell, out February 25th, 2022, across state lines and around the world.
The band came together in 2014, throwing underground shows in their own garage along with other area groups. This attracted a lot of police attention and guitarist Szyndrowski wound up with an arrest warrant. Eventually, the gigs moved into the living room, the cops never came again, and Funny Face was on its way. Now, the band is all about vans, hangouts, and driving around as a crew of best friends playing DIY shows that get people up and moving.
Funny Face is often compared to early Pavement and Thee Oh Sees but are far too cool to be summed up that easily. FF is a band that comes at you straight off the floorboards with a timeless-yet-original style, tunes that linger for days, and the kind of high-test magic that turned us all on in the first place. Fans of catchy, driving rock need to pay attention because their new favorite band just arrived.
